Diwali

Diwali
or the Festival of Lights is a Hindu celebration that is celebrated in October or November. Diwali is celebrated to proclaim to victory of Lord Krishna over Narakasura. It was a victoriuos defeat where goog won over evil. Lord Krishna was the “good guy”. Everyone trusted him and worshiped him. Lord Krishna, felt the need to banish the demon Narakasura for good because of the improper things he was doing. Narakasura, had the power of changing form so he would pretend to be someone and kill other people and destroy people’s property. He would burn homes and light the crops that the farmers would plant and grow on fire. Narakasura also put people in jail including Lord Krishna. The reason for this was that he wanted the people to obey him and worship him instead of the trustworthy Lord Krishna.

To celebrate his victory, Tamil Hindu’s dress in new clothes and go to temple. Family’s visit other family members and relatives with gifts to exchange or sweets to give. After dinner is when the kids have the most fun! Fire crackers are lite and before your eyes you see and spetacular display of lights. Diwali is definatley my favourite out of all of the celebrations.

This is a picture of Lord Krishna as a child. He is with a baby cow. Hindu Gods are especially fond of animals.

This is a photograph of a person portraying Narakasura. A.K.A "The Bad Guy". In house there is a mask of Narakasura that is hung of the front door to keep anything bad from coming in. He is sort of like a bug repelent except he scares away the not so nice people.

This painting recreates the scene when Lord Krishna got rid of Narakasura for good.
